Sood Yod Thai ~ Petaling Jaya

After a few visits to Sood Yod Thai, here are my favorites at this Chiang Mai Thai restaurant in Kelana Jaya.

The Khao Soi is their must-try Chiang Mai dish and I wholeheartedly agree! The 2 preparation egg noodles (blanched and deep fried) in the rich coconut curry is deeply satisfying and hearty. It's good whether with the chicken drumstick or the deep fried chicken fillet.

The Pla Moo or Thai grilled pork spicy mixed salad had an addictive sauce with well-marinated grilled pork and a surprisingly tender lemongrass which is unlike the woody, fibrous lemongrass we're accustomed to.

The grass jelly with milk and brown sugar is the perfect dessert after the hot and hearty meal.

I've also had the Khao Yam Jin Gai, the Thai spicy chicken soup which had dry and stringy shredded chicken in an intensely spicy soup which had a strange bitterness. The flavours, if any were unfortunately overwhelmed by the spiciness.

Small Town Girl Vegetarian Cuisine ~ Kota Damansara

I rarely frequent vegetarian places although I do love greens so being able to return to this vegetarian restaurant again and again is a good indication of just how enjoyable it is.

Small Town Girl in Kota Damansara serves hearty and satisfying vegetarian meals which really proves that vegetarian food is anything but boring.

Pictured are their Curry Lion's Mane Mushroom & Lychee rice, Signature Jiro ramen and Signature Cendol.

My other favorites are all their Lion's Mane Mushroom dishes especially the rendang version, their hearty Nostalgia Rice which has a bit of everything with an ingredient loaded soup on the side and their massive Claypot Curry Vegetables.

The rendang spices used is one of the punchiest I've ever had, resulting in a deep-flavored and fragrant rendang. Using lion's mane mushroom to soak up all the strong flavors is a great idea and paired with the texture of the fibrous, chewy and meaty mushroom, you could easily fool a meat eater.

I'm unfortunately not a fan of their vegetarian char siew and roasted chicken leg but the mock meat items have an intensively roasty and smokey flavor.

Common Feed ~ Damansara Uptown

Fans of Italian cold cuts and sandwiches have a new spot to look forward to in Damansara Uptown!

At Common Feed, the focaccia sandwich had springy bread with tasty, well-balanced fillings while the zesty pesto with crab had generous toppings, a fresh lemony pesto with a nice hint of chilli, deviating from the basil heavy flavors that I'm usually not fond of.

Portions are generous overall with the 2 items above well-shared among 2 rather big eaters. Coffee is also enjoyable, pleasant even without milk.

大一馄饨 Dayi Wantan ~ Pudu, KL

A wantan shop opened across from my favorite dumpling shop in Pudu and with its delicious options, it's about to be my favourite wantan shop as well.

Dayi Wantan has 7 wantan types served with minced pork and scallion oil noodles. Each wantan had a delicate wrapper with tasty fillings - I liked the prawn with fish roe especially. The seaweed and meat wantan was a unique combination.

For the snacks, I loved the spicy and flavorful laziji.

it out with their selection of refreshing pickles at their self service sauce station - I probably ate too much pickled papaya. Add the garlic chilli and chilli oil to the noodles for a different flavor depth to your liking.

Yim Yam Thai Kway Chap ~ Kelana Jaya

Yim yam's Thai kway chap reminds me a lot of a pork version of Thai beef noodles with flat rice noodles.

The broth is garlicky, herbal and earthy and toppings aside, the flat rice noodles is one of the best renditions of kway chap noodles I've ever had. The chewy, not too thick, not too thin noodles were the perfect amount of QQ for slurping and chewing.

The deep fried chicken wings are okay while the som tam could do with more sweetness and acidity.

For drinks, the Pandan water was alright while the iced coffee was astringent and bitter. I couldn't continue drinking it after two sips.

[Permanently Closed] Ming Kee Seafood Noodle ~ Damansara Uptown

The popularity of lala noodles are on the rise and not 1 but 2 lala noodles places are now available at Damansara Uptown.

Ming Kee Seafood Noodles's menu is small but there is a good variety of lala dishes including unconventional lala soup flavors such as tomyam and cheese.

The tomyam lala noodles could've been better with a more balanced tom yam soup but the Hua Diao lala noodles were well seasoned, fragrant and comforting. Equally interesting was their Kam Heong lala, tasty and cooked well.

[Permanently Closed] Ming Teppanyaki ~ SS2, PJ

Ming Teppanyaki is a popular 'Taiwanese-styled teppanyaki' restaurant in PJ and I've never attempted to visit as it's always full and I have no patience to wait in line for a table.

The opportunity to visit them cam recently after the lunch hour rush (after 2pm) and was I delighted to discover that their lunch menu runs from 12-5pm! The lunch menu comprises of proteins with a choice of noodles or rice which comes with 2 small sides and miso soup.

Pictured is their pork patty set with noodles. I usually have issues with pork patties as they turn out 'too porky' but these were nothing like that! These are likely made using a mixture of minced pork and cured meat which results in a delicious salty and sweet 'bacon-y'-flavored pork patty.

The noodles are plainly tossed with black and soy sauce plus some lard which I didn't enjoy but the noodle texture is bouncy and pleasant.

Overall a really good meal.

Mamalee's Nasi Lemak ~ Damansara Uptown

In the 'nasi lemak war' of Damansara Uptown, one nasi lemak has been my constant for having excellent fried chicken with an equally excellent buttermilk sauce made extra nice with a spicy version.

Mamalee's signature is completing their nasi lemak with whole chicken legs and a variety of sauces, the most popular being their buttermilk and salted egg sauce. It definitely sets them apart from the traditional nasi lemak and lauk style but their stir fried vegetables and other Penang Nyonya dishes are not too shabby either.

There are also options for prawns or squid with a sauce of choice and recently I found out their squid is freshly fried calamari. Not the norm but still, very delicious.

Luncheon meat meals @ Wonderful Mondays ~ SS2, PJ

I have tried to like canned luncheon meat but the block of salty meat has never really appealed to me until this visit to Wonderful Mondays.

The 3 types of luncheon meat here - chicken, beef & fish is served with a sauce of your choice out of 15 options alongside a carb of your choice. For carbs, there's rice, dry or soup ramen, porridge and even western choices of a burger, sandwich, croissant or hotdog.

My signature sauced beef luncheon meat with ramen was delicious! Firstly, the luncheon meat wasn't the sodium laden kind and tasted very much like the actual meat. Secondly, serving it with a choice of sauce was interesting and the sauces do not to distract you from the meat flavor. Finally, the ramen texture was just right and the light garlic oil made it a good pair with the tasty meat. The overall dish was an enjoyable combination of a fulfilling but not jelak lunch.

I also ordered a side of chicken luncheon meat nuggets with salted egg sauce. It tasted more like a creamy tumeric sauce but it wasn't unpleasant.

Makan partner ordered a whole leg of ayam goreng classic and it came piping hot, juicy and crispy. The sides of beef rendang was slightly sweet but amazingly tender. The acar was alright.

Overall, Wonderful Mondays was a delightful eating experience. Plus point is that they're Muslim friendly so everyone can enjoy luncheon meat. Now if only they could do something about the ventilation of the place...
