Grilled Wagyu Ribeye with Braised Tail and Mushrooms--beefilicious |
Ezel finally gave in and wrote me a review for Cilantro! It took forever for me to convince him to write a review for Deliciouslogy since he's technically part of it yadda yadda yadda *sends more guilt aura over*.
In the end, he wrote this without any convincing.
Sheesh.
Anyways, here's Ezel's review for Cilantro.
My birthday lunch at Cilantro, courtesy of Miss Nikki Liaw Li Sian and Miss Geraldine Mak Hwei Lamm (thank you, love you two so much).
Located at MiCasa All Suite Hotel on Jalan Tun Razak (a stone throw’s away from KLCC), Cilantro is ranked 8th by the Miele Guide in the entire Asia, and I have to say the position is well-deserved. All hits, no misses, and the great food is surpassed only by the great company.
For this trip, we were there for the Friday set lunch. The set lunches are rotated every week, so expect something entirely different every time you come for the lunches. It was expensive (RM 150 per set!) but despite that I have to say worth every single penny you pay for it.
A glass of Kir Royale, quietly bubbling. |
We started off with the Kir Royale—the only consistent thing that appears on the menu every week. A mixture of blackcurrant liqueur and champagne, it was strong, full flavoured and great start to the meal. I suspect some people might find it a tad too strong, however. Kir Royale's supposed to be blackcurrant liqueur and champagne, but for some reason it was yellow in colour.
Escalope of Kanburi With Daikon |
The first dish comes in the form of Escalope of Kanburi With Daikon—thin slices of radish with generous slabs of fresh kanburi (yellowtail amberjack) served with a mild sauce. It was fresh, raw fish with all the goodness and none of the bad smell, along with great texture that goes well with the sauce and turnip. If you’re a fan of sushi and sashimi, you’d love this.
Foie Gras with Cabbage and Perigueux (HIGHLIGHT OF THE DAY) |
Despite how good the first dish was, it was greatly overshadowed by the Foie Gras with Cabbage and Perigueux…melt-in-your-mouth foie gras, perfectly seared wrapped in a cabbage. The foie gras was cooked just right , retaining its natural flavours while giving it a nice bite and taste from the time on the pan.
One more picture because one isn’t enough. The insides. |
I believe there's even a thin layer of truffle somewhere in there giving it a marvellous depth of flavour. It was a perfect meld of taste and texture that slowly but surely filled the mouth with a great flavour. On the side, a tuber-based paste I believe...not too sure.
With the appetizers out of the way, it was then time for the main course— Grilled Wagyu Ribeye with Braised Tail and Mushrooms.
After the last dish, the bar was already set really high, and I was glad that to say that although I think the last dish was better, this was not to be underestimated either. If not for the foie gras in cabbage, this would be THE star of the day. Perfectly cooked wagyu--crisp on the outside and tender on the inside-- with a sauce bursting with mushroom flavour. Unlike many flavourless beef steaks and similar dishes I had before, each bite of the wagyu beef was a great satisfaction.
The heavenly beef! |
Earl Grey Bavarois with Orange Confiture |
We ended the meal with dessert, which was the Earl Grey Bavarois with Orange Confiture. It was probably one of the best endings to a meal I ever had. The greyish pudding-thing is the bavarois--a piece of gastronomic art which somehow condensed the flavour of Earl Grey tea into that small pudding, easily exploding with the flavour of tea and bergamot. Eat it together with the orange and vanilla ice cream for the best effect, to quite literally have a burst of flavours in your mouth!
With a price tag of RM150, Cilantro is definitely not a place most people can eat casually at. If there’s a special occasion that warrants that amount of spending, however, this restaurant is perhaps the best place for that. Great ambiance, good location, and perhaps one of the best fine dining food in Malaysia. Personally I’d save up RM150 just to go there again!
