After teasing us for a year (or more?), Tendon Kohaku (finally!) opened in J's Gate Dining late September 2019. I had forgotten about them until a Mo-mo Paradise visit in December got derailed at the sight of the Tendon Kohaku store front instead of the hoarding.
Wanting to try everything, I went with the signature Kohaku tendon which consists of 2 prawns, 2 pieces of chicken breast and a piece each of squid, crab stick, shitake, baby corn, pumpkin plus a bunch of French beans. A lot of these ingredients are not commonly made into tempura - chicken breast? baby corn? French beans? Yes, it's rather unusual.
But here comes the surprising bit - the chicken breast turned out to be the most enjoyable out of all the ingredients. It was moist and flavorful and I liked it more than the prawns which are usually my favorite parts of a tendon. The prawns were large but had an alkali water flavor. The rest of the ingredients were alright but nothing really stood out.
For those who don't mind a spicier sauce, I would recommend the spicy sauce. It actually packed some heat and cut through the greasiness from the tempura. Overall, the tendon was just okay and in my opinion, still not as good as the Japanese tendon restaurant chains (ahem Tendon Tenya).
