I did not understand Kolok Mee when I first had it in Sibu more than 10 years ago. Slices of char siew and minced pork sitting on an oily, lardy bed of noodles was pretty unappealing with my sensitivity to lard and porky smells.
However, the Kolok Mee at Happy Fellow has gotten me hooked.
Happy Fellow has only 2 types of noodles on the menu - Kolok Mee (with a variety of toppings and sauce choices) and Sarawak Laksa.
My first meal here was the standard Sarawak Laksa (also comes in an extra toppings version) and I found it to be just okay. This probably comes with the fact that I have a very specific taste for the Sarawak laksa that I myself cook.
The Kolok Mee however is a completely different story. The noodles are springy and there's just enough sauce, lard and fried onion oil. You leave the meal not feeling jelak and even have some space for extra meat toppings or dumplings which by the way are great here as well.
For toppings, there is the option of char siew, smoked duck, pop corn chicken plus a default of minced pork. Extra toppings of your choice can be selected and with every bowl of noodles, you get to add on an extra portion of noodle for free!
Dumplings come in 2-3 sauce options here, very enjoyable.
I noticed at Sarawakian food places, 3 layer teh c seems to be a must and as much as I dislike wheatgrass, I doubt it's pandan syrup that I'm tasting. The combination of tea, milk and unknown green syrup is a delicious one.
The Triple Sour however turned out too sour and too strong to be enjoyable for me.
A must try!
